November 2007 e-Newsletter
A
Message from Susie Kay:

DC Councilman Harry "Tommy" Thomas, Jr. with some
HDSF Students at
the October 2007 Mentoring Workshop
The end of the calendar year is
just the beginning for us here at Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. The
fall is the start of the school year, and we have our Hoop Dreams
Mentoring Program up and running with 85 fantastic students from
Washington, DC. Along with our students are nearly 100 dedicated mentors
who we are so thankful for - their commitment to our mission is
truly appreciated!
As we approach the holiday
season, we would ask that you consider
supporting our efforts here. A financial donation to Hoop
Dreams can make a lifetime of impact to one of our students looking
to improve his/her life. Remember beyond college access, Hoop Dreams
supports our students by connecting them to resources, networks and
opportunities. You can be a part of this process by supporting us
during this holiday season. Thank you again for your interest in
Hoop Dreams, and on behalf of our incredible students and staff,
Happy Holidays from Hoop Dreams!

P.S. - Special thanks to DC Councilmember Harry "Tommy" Thomas,
Jr. for joining Hoop Dreams at our October 2007 Mentoring
Workshop held at The George Washington University's Elliot
School. For more great photos of the day's event, please check out

HDSF Alumni Outreach Program
Kicks Off 2007-08 Year

Hoop Dreams doesn't stop its
experience with our students the moment they move on to college or
other paths after their high school graduation. More than ever,
support and access to resources is essential during this time of
transition. We are proud of our continuing efforts to provide a base
of support to our "alumni" students of the Hoop Dreams Mentoring
Program. This year, to emphasize the importance of this time in the
students' lives, HDSF is proud to welcome our newest team member,
Ms. Emily Coccia, who will lead our alumni outreach programs and
services. Welcome to the team, Emily! Attention HDSF Alumni!
Reconnect with your Hoop Dreams family! Check out the
HDSF Alumni Website to learn

Online Searches, Online
Shopping to Benefit HDSF!

Hoop Dreams has partnered with GoodSearch to develop a simple,
everyday way to help support our programs and organization. Do you
do online searches? Use a search engine, something like, say, Yahoo?
Well your searches can actually support Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund
by utilizing GoodSearch. Powered by Yahoo, the idea is simple - go
to
http://www.goodsearch.com and enter "Hoop Dreams Scholarship
Fund" as your selected charity. Then … search away! Every search you
do will create a donation to Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund! A penny a
search doesn't seem like a lot to you? Think of how many searches
you perform in a day! Now multiply that by all your friends, family,
co-workers, and colleagues?
With the Holiday Season, and
that can only mean - shopping. Are you an online shopper? GoodSearch
also allows you to shop online while supporting Hoop Dreams! Go to
the
GoodSearch website can select the "GoodShop" banner in the
center-right of the page. From there you will be able to select some
of your favorite online stores such as Nike, Apple, Best Buy and
hundreds more! By using the store links from the GoodSearch site,
each retailer will donate a percentage of your sales to Hoop Dreams!
Talk about easy! You were going to shop online anyway - why not help
Hoop Dreams as well!
Need an Intern? Bring on a
HDSF Student to Your Company!
Do you have a
company or business looking for internship support? Would you like
to provide a paid internship for a deserving DC high school student?
Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund is looking for YOU!
The goal of the Hoop Dreams
Scholarship Fund Internship Program is to motivate students to
explore career possibilities, to provide job experience, and place
each intern in a job that matches his or her academic and/or career
goals. Once the student articulates their academic and/or career
goals, a member of the HDSF program staff works with the student on
job placement techniques such as interviewing, business dress, etc.
The staff member then liaises between the Internship Provider and
the student. During the internship, the HDSF program staff member
monitors the student's performance by communicating with the student
and his or her supervisor.
More than 300 students have
served in internships in businesses and government agencies
throughout metropolitan Washington, learning valuable life skills -
and earning a paycheck. Among the notable Washington, DC area
organizations which have offered Hoop Dreams internships are: United
States House and Senate and Congressional offices; Washington
Department of Emergency Medicine; Kimsey Foundation; Verizon Center;
Washington Sports & Entertainment; and Friedman Billings Ramsey.
Several of our students have returned to take full-time positions
with their internship provider after graduating from college.
If you are interested in
providing an internship please contact
Tyler Atkins at: 202-289-6109.

long without some wonderful food from Pumpkin! As we say goodbye to our
friend Dana, we also say hello to our new Hoop Dreamer, Ms. J.
Logan Kapinus! Welcome Logan!
