Derek McGinty, nationally renowned news anchor, will be the Keynote Speaker at the Hoop Dreams Monthly Mentoring Workshop, Saturday, November 11, 2006

Join the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund this Saturday, November 11th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm for the 2nd Mentoring Workshop of the 2006 - 2007 program year. Our keynote speaker will be Derek McGinty, who will kick-off the session at 1:00 pm.

Mr. McGinty is the weekday co-anchor for W*USA 9NEWS NOW at 5pm and weeknight anchor for W*USA 9NEWS NOW at 7pm, as well as host of Eye On Washington which airs at 7pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday. Prior to joining the CBS affiliate, he was co-anchor of ABC NEWS' overnight broadcast, World News Now, and anchor of World News This Morning.

Mr. McGinty was a correspondent for "HBO's Real Sports" for 4 years and for the nationally broadcast program, Public Eye with "Bryant Gumbel" on CBS. From 1991 to 1998, he became increasingly popular on a nationwide basis with "The Derek McGinty Show" on WAMU. His guests have included DC Mayor Marion Barry; former Secretary of State James Baker; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; jazz musician Wynton Marsalis; rapper Ice-T; and author Robert Ludlum. In 1994, the show received the highest programming honor in public radio, when it won the Gold Award for Public Affairs Programming from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting. And, he represented the pulse of the community as co-host of "The Daily Drum," a news and interview program covering local politics on WHUR-FM.

Derek McGinty's work although rooted in the Washington community is recognized nationally amongst the media industry. Articles by McGinty have appeared in The New York Times; The Washington Post; The New York Daily News; and Washingtonian Magazine.

A native Washingtonian, Derek McGinty is a graduate of American University, where he received a bachelor's degree in communications.

The Mentoring Workshop will be held at the Elliott School at The George Washington University - 1957 E Street NW. at 1:00 pm.

Hoop Dreams Internships: Priceless

The Hoop Dreams Internship Program is an after school job placement program for college bound students in their senior year of high school and Hoop Dreams college students returning in the summer. Internships are key in exposing our students to career options, preparing these young people for the workforce, providing work experience, and allowing them to learn valuable life skills. To date, more than 300 Hoop Dreams students have served in internships with businesses and government agencies throughout the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Thank you to our 2006 - 2007 internship providers.

The internship program is a valuable experience for the students and a great experience for internship providers. If you are interested in providing an internship, please contact Tyler Atkins at tatkins@hoopdreams.org.

Hoop Dreams Participates in the CFC/United Way Giving Program

Dream Forever

The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund welcomes all contributions that work as a means of ensuring that our mission and programs will continue into the future. As a non-profit organization, Hoop Dreams can be named as a full or partial beneficiary in a will or life insurance policy.

Bequests offer an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy. When you make a charitable bequest, you retain full use of your property during life, so there is no disruption of your lifestyle, no immediate out-of-pocket costs.

Since a charitable bequest can take many forms, you have considerable flexibility. You can leave a particular asset, a specific sum of money, a percentage of your estate or what remains of your estate after you have provided for other beneficiaries. You can designate exactly how you want your bequest to be used or leave it unrestricted so that Hoop Dreams has the flexibility to meet our most significant needs. Important to also remember is that you can change any bequest provision during your life which means you remain in complete control of the process.

While a bequest does not offer income tax benefits, it is deductible for estate tax purposes. Estate tax rates are higher than income tax rates.

If you have made a bequest to Hoop Dreams please let us know. We would like to thank you for your commitment and generosity. If you are considering making a bequest we can provide you with the suggested language or with other pertinent information which may be helpful to you.

Ongoing support of Hoop Dreams is needed and will keep our youth focused on their dreams, while building bridges within our communities - now and forever.

Participate in YARDS FOR YOUTH

The Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund is proud to participate in the 2006-2007 Booz Allen Hamilton - Redskins Yards for Youth program. Participating non-profits benefit from funds pledged for offensive yards gained by the Redskins during the 2006-2007 football season. Yards for Youth will raise funds throughout the football season - from September's home opener to the final game in December - and beyond if the Redskins make the playoffs! With your support, every time an offensive yard is gained, we win!

How can you help us reach our goal? Pledge a specific amount of money for each offensive yard gained during the 2006-2007 Washington Redskins season or make a one-time set contribution to support Hoop Dreams. For each offensive yard gained, your contribution will help us reach our goal. For example, if you pledge .01 cent per yard and the Redskins gain 6,000 offensive yards (combination of passing and rushing yards), your total donation at the end of the season would be $60.

To make a pledge or one-time donation to Hoop Dreams, log onto www.yardsforyouth.org/HoopDreams.

Yards for Youth builds upon the strong commitment to social philanthropy in the local community that global consulting firm, Booz Allen Hamilton and the Redskins have cultivated over the years.
